Wyeth is an international pharmaceutical company with corporate headquarters in the USA and is represented in over 80 countries. The UK is a very significant part of Wyeth - in the top five nationally and an important provider of skills within the global organisation. Wyeth are moving from what have become a number of legacy JDE IT systems and platforms to newer SAP/Siebel/Cognos systems and platforms which are seen to be better business enablers for them.
However, in order to ensure that the new systems deliver exactly to their complex business needs the personnel who support and develop their existing systems have to be heavily involved in the build, development and implementation of the new systems as they have all of the business related IT knowledge. So in order to support their existing systems whilst the new systems are put in place the positions of those personnel have to be filled from outside the business as they cannot recruit permanent people to fill them. Also, because all of the systems are business critical, the risks involved in hiring a group of disparate contractors were seen as unacceptable.
