Inmarsat

Inmarsat pioneered and developed global mobile satellite communications. Established in 1979 to serve the maritime industry by developing satellite communications for ship management and distress and safety applications. Inmarsat operates a global satellite system. This is used by independent service providers to offer a range of voice and multimedia communications for customers on the move or in remote locations. While continuing to perform its original mandate, Inmarsat has since expanded into land, mobile and aeronautical communications, so that users now include thousands of people who live and work in remote areas without reliable terrestrial networks, or travellers anywhere. Users such as journalists and broadcasters, health teams and disaster relief workers, land transport fleet operators, airlines, airline passengers and air traffic controllers, government workers, national emergency and civil defence agencies, and heads of state. A requirement emerged to build a Data Warehouse application to report on Inmarsat’s diverse customer base and the use of the satellite services to exploit new business opportunities.

Spargonet were selected in 1999 to build and maintain the Data Warehouse based on some existing work. New feeds and interfaces were built to ensure the accuracy and keep the warehouse up to date. The warehouse and feeds are Oracle based with Brio as a reporting tool. Additionally Spargonet Consulting added value to the project by ensuring that all programs and procedures were professionally documented. The Warehouse has changed and increased in content over the years with new feeds and ETL processes being put in place. Many new applications for reporting, data interrogation and management information presentation have been built as the range of information held has increased. Currently new initiatives are under way with the team trained in the Oracle BI product range OBIEE using OWB , BI publisher etc for the next step forward.

As a result of the successful conclusion and high standard of work carried out by Spargonet on the warehouse a partnership has been formed for the past 10 years. Spargonet still support the warehouse and have undertaken a number of development projects both on a time and materials and fixed price basis. The various projects cover: Web, Java, VB, PL/SQL, Brio, BODI, Hyperion, UNIX and Oracle 9i, 10g, OBIEE, Bi-Publisher, OWB.

Application areas covered include: data warehouse, finance, MI presentation, billing and phone control.
